Biography

Arifa Ghani Rahman is currently a full-time Associate Professor in the Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal ARts Bangladesh (ULAB) and Adjunct Faculty at Rivier University, New Hampshire, USA. She has over twenty years of experience in teaching literature and writing in Bangladeshi and US universities, both face to face and online. Currently, she teaches fiction, composition, and research at ULAB, and writing and literature courses at Rivier. She is the former Coordinator of the MA program at ULAB and the Executive Editor of Crossings, the peer-reviewed journal of the Department of English and Humanities. She is Advisor to the Communications Office and Faculty Trainer for Moodle, a learning management software.

Though she was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Arifa grew up on the campus of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria. After completing her O and A Levels, she returned to Bangladesh with her family. She got admitted into the Department of English at the University of Dhaka from where she completed her BA and MA in English as valedictorian. Her MA result earned her a gold medal from the university.

Arifa worked briefly for the NGO, PROSHIKA, until her Masters results were published after which she joined the Department of English at Jahangirnagar University as a lecturer in 1996. After three and half years at the department, Arifa left for the US to do a second Masters at Texas A & M University, College Station. She completed her second MA in English in 2001.

Arifa is a trained editor and and a published translator. She has worked  as both with corporate clients as well as creative writers. She is excited by technology and constantly keeps herself updated about new tools, often independently figuring out how to work with them.

​

Arifa is married to Faruq Rahman, a software engineer by training. They have two daughters, Srishty and Lana, and currently reside in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
